YCDI Pre-Service Training

Morisset Public School has strong links with the University of Newcastle and each year, fourth year students from the university apply for an internship with a teacher from the school. A critical part of the students experience at Morisset Public School is focussing on professional learning and development. In 2011, the Students were offered training in You Can Do It! Education.

YCDI trainer, Ann-Maree Kelly, presented a full day workshop to the interns and teachers who were new to the school. The focus was on teaching the foundation skills of Organisation, Persistence, Getting-Along, Confidence and Resilience and Positive Habits of the Mind. These pre-service teachers left with knowledge and understanding of social emotional learning and the skills to implement the You Can Do It! Program. They also benefitted from learning about the social emotional skills that will enhance their resilience and help them as beginning teachers.

It is a priority for You Can Do It! to target pre-service teachers to ensure that they are aware of the impact of social emotional learning on the mental health and well-being of their students and that they are equipped to work with their students in the future.

Train the Trainer – Mecure Airport Hotel Sydney

Delegates from across Australia and New Zealand attended their final day of the three day Train the Trainer program at a seminar presented by Prof. Michael Bernard on the 10th August. Participants had undertaken two days of training in April and then went back to their schools to practice their implementation skills. Day three provided an opportunity to showcase their achievements and to gain further knowledge in social emotional learning.

This was the final Train the Trainer session in this format. The organisation of training is currently under review, so watch this space for the new and improved arrangements and keep an eye on the calendar for the 2012 dates and venues.
